What is Breathwork?

Everything you need to know before you try it — the science, the benefits, what to expect, and whether it's right for you.

The basics

Breathwork is not what most people think it is

When most people hear breathwork, they think of box breathing, deep breathing exercises, or meditation techniques. What I teach is something completely different.

Conscious connected breathwork is an active, rhythmic breathing practice that bypasses the thinking mind and works directly with the body. It's one of the most powerful tools available for releasing stored stress, trauma and emotional pain — and the results are felt in the body, not just the head.

It's been described as years of therapy in a single session. Not because it replaces therapy, but because it accesses parts of the nervous system that talking simply can't reach.

During a conscious connected breathwork session, the continuous circular breathing pattern shifts the chemistry of the body, activates the parasympathetic nervous system, and creates the conditions for the body to release what it has been holding. Emotions, memories, physical sensations and deep states of relaxation can all arise — and move through.

The science

Why it works

Stress and trauma are not just mental experiences — they are stored in the body. Research by Dr Bessel van der Kolk, Peter Levine and others has shown that the body holds onto unresolved stress responses long after the event has passed. This is why talking about something doesn't always shift the way it feels.

Conscious connected breathwork works because it:

Activates the parasympathetic nervous system

The breathing pattern signals safety to the nervous system, shifting it out of fight-or-flight and into a state where healing can actually happen.

Releases stored emotional energy

The continuous breath creates a physiological state that allows suppressed emotions and stored stress to surface and move through the body rather than staying stuck.

Increases oxygen flow to the brain

The altered breathing pattern changes the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the body, which can create expanded states of awareness, deep relaxation, and emotional release.

Bypasses the thinking mind

Unlike talk therapy, breathwork doesn't require you to analyse or understand what you're feeling. The body does the work. You don't have to know what you're carrying to release it.

The benefits

What women experience

Nervous system regulation

Your body learns it's safe to come out of survival mode. The constant bracing and hypervigilance starts to ease.

Emotional release

Grief, anger, sadness, fear — emotions that have been suppressed or stored finally have somewhere to go.

Mental clarity

When the body releases stored stress, the mind quiets. The racing thoughts, the 2am spiral, the mental noise — it softens.

Trauma processing

Old wounds and unresolved experiences can move through the body without having to be talked through or relived.

Physical relief

Tension held in the body — the tight chest, the jaw, the shoulders — begins to release. Women often feel physically lighter after a session.

Expanded states

With consistent practice, breathwork can open up deeper states of awareness, intuition, and connection to self.

Better sleep

As the nervous system regulates, sleep improves. The body finally feels safe enough to rest deeply.

Reduced anxiety

When stored stress releases and the nervous system regulates, anxiety loses its grip. Things that used to trigger spiral thinking start to pass.

What I teach

Conscious connected breathwork

There are many styles of breathwork. What I practise and teach is conscious connected breathwork — a continuous, circular breathing pattern where there is no pause between the inhale and the exhale.

This specific pattern is what creates the conditions for deep release. The continuous breath keeps the thinking mind occupied and allows the body to do what it needs to do without interference.

Sessions are fully guided from start to finish. I hold the space, guide the breath, support whatever comes up, and bring you back gently at the end. You don't need to do anything except breathe and follow my guidance.

I am a certified Level 2 Ox Gen Breathwork Therapist, trained in trauma-informed breathwork facilitation. All sessions are held with full awareness that breathwork is a trauma release modality — meaning emotions, memories and physical sensations can arise. You are always safe and supported throughout.

What to expect

What happens in a session

  • 1

    You get settled and comfortable

Find somewhere to lie down — your bed is perfect. Get your blanket, eye mask if you have one, and a glass of water nearby. You want to feel as comfortable as possible.

  • 2

I guide you into the breath

I'll explain the breathing pattern clearly and walk you through it step by step. There is nothing complicated about it — it's a simple circular breath that I guide you through the whole time.

  • 3

    The session unfolds

Once you're in the rhythm, things start to happen. You might feel tingling, warmth, emotion, memories, deep relaxation, or nothing at all. Every session is different. Every experience is valid.

  • 4

    The release

This is where the magic happens. Stored stress, emotion and tension begin to move through the body. You might cry, laugh, shake, or simply feel waves of release. This is your body doing exactly what it needs to do.

  • 5

    Integration

I bring you back slowly and gently. There is time to land the experience before the session closes. Most women feel lighter, clearer and deeply relaxed.

    About Nay

    Nay

I spent 17 years living with major depression, PTSD and panic attacks rooted in grief. After trying everything, conscious connected breathwork and holistic therapies were the first things that actually moved it. Not managed it. Moved it.

Now as a Master Practitioner of Holistic Counselling and Empowerment Coaching, Meditation Teacher and Level 2 Ox Gen Breathwork Therapist, I help women get to the root cause of their stress and release what their body is holding — so their mind quiets, their emotions regulate, and their energy comes back.
